Jadavpur University

Jadavpur University is a State University in the state of West Bengal. Its parent institution was set up by the National Council of Education, Bengal. After India's independence, the institution was converted to a University under the First Jadavpur University. Jadavpur University has been declared a University with Potential for Excellence by the University Grants Commission. The University has also been accredited with the status of 'five star' by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
The Engineering Faculty has long been known for its excellence in training, innovative programmes and research. The Science Faculty accounts largely for the reputation of the University as a major centre of research in frontier areas and as a leader in devising interdisciplinary teaching programmes. The Arts Faculty boasts many Departments of Special Assistance and Centres of Advanced Study, including English, Philosophy and Comparative Literature. It has the only Department of Film Studies in the subcontinent. Research in inter-disciplinary and emerging areas is one of its strengths.
Jadavpur University is in Kolkata, renowned for its cultural and intellectual heritage. It had been the capital of British India for a long time, and has been a major centre of the Indian struggle for independence. Jadavpur University is a direct descendant of the movement for modern indigenous education , and the spirit is still strong in its programmes and practices.
Founding members of National Council of Bengal, the parent body of the Jadavpur University, in 1906 set the goal "To achieve self reliance through empowerment of Youth by imparting Best of Global Knowledge". Today the University also aims :To promote and pursue higher education by linking up traditionally separated subjects in the light of the ever-changing global scenario. To explore new dimensions of academic administration free of bureaucratic impediments. To set up a role model for academic leadership.

Main Activities, Education, research, active role in policy formulation for government and non-government organisations; development of technology, development and application of different types of indigenous knowledge, services to the community. To make the university internationally competitive. To work closely with policy makers. To explore and invite funding agencies to support non-conventional activities of the University
Major Achievements, The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India has identified the University as one the first five universities in the country with 'Potential for Excellence'. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accorded the highest grading and accredited the university with 'five star' status. The University was nominated the lead institution for the Word Bank funded programme TEQIP.The Ministry of Human Resource Development identified the Faculty of Engineering and Technology as one of the seven major Indian centres specializing in technology.The University is among the international centres of learning awarded the Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund by Tokyo Foundation, Japan.The British Library granted three projects to the University under its Endangered Archives Programme. No university in the world, except one in China, has been awarded so many.
