RRI LIBRARY

The present library has been developed around the library started by Prof. C. V. Raman . With his varied interests in different branches of science and deep interest in reading, he had added many invaluable books to the library. After the institute's activities enlarged , library's collection developed in the new areas of research activities.
Its collection is strong in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics, theoretical physics, optics and liquid crystals. Apart from these subjects, there are books on computer science, electronics, scientific biographies, general science, nature and fine arts. It has also a collection of non-book materials like scientific slides, CDROMS and sky surveys(both on paper and CDROMS), audio and video tapes.
The Library participates in inter library networking activities and has a good rapport with the libraries in the city as well as outside. It is used not only by the scientists of this institute but also by others belonging to Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, National Aerospace Laboratory, National Center for Biological Sciences and TIFR Center. The library has full text access to several ONLINE JOURNALS.
The library collection is built around the invaluable personal collection of Prof. C.V. Raman. It has presently about twenty thousand five hundred and sixty books. Library subscribes to hundred and thirty seven journals. Of these, sixteen are being received by airmail. It has inter library facilities with other libraries in the city. There is a multimedia system to read the Digital Sky Survey (brought out by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific) on hundred and one CDROMs.
This system can be used to read other CDs and multimedia and as it is connected to the campus network, it is often used to access World Wide Web sites. E-mail is used regularly for correspondence and to receive preprint lists, IAU Circulars and various news bulletins. These are available to the RRI staff and students on an Electronic Bulletin Board accessible on the internal network. Other internet facilities like telnet, ftp, etc. are also used to search information
